What is Morocco's currency and its exchange rate?

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). The exchange rate fluctuates around 10 dirhams per 1 euro, but varies depending on market conditions and exchange locations.

The Moroccan Dirham (MAD)

The Moroccan dirham is the only legal currency in Morocco. It is divided into 100 cents and exists in banknotes of 20, 50, 100 and 200 dirhams, as well as coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 dirhams.

Exchange rate and where to exchange

The indicative rate hovers around 10 dirhams for 1 euro, but it fluctuates daily. The best rates are obtained:

  • In Moroccan banks: official rate, transparent commissions
  • At approved exchange offices: present in airports and city centers
  • At ATMs: convenient but check banking fees

Things to remember

Avoid black market exchange (illegal) and keep your exchange receipts to convert your remaining dirhams before departure. The dirham is not convertible abroad.
