The spirit of travel
At dawn, on the heights of Khongor, the silence of the Gobi is broken only by the breath of wind in the golden dunes. For five days, the saddle of your Mongolian mount reveals the secrets of the Orkhon Valley, a world heritage site where nomadic herders perpetuate their thousand-year-old traditions.
The itinerary draws a contrasting loop between the Khangaï mountains and the mineral immensity of the desert. Karakorum unveils the vestiges of Genghis Khan's empire, while the Tovkhon monastery perched at 2,312 meters offers a breathtaking panorama over the valleys. Further south, Bayanzag reveals its reddish cliffs populated with dinosaur fossils, before the Khongor dunes impose their singing grandeur. On the back of a Bactrian camel, exploration continues towards the icy canyons of Yoliin Am.
This journey unites the heritage of the Mongol khans with the daily gestures of nomadic families. Between morning milking and the preparation of khorkhog under the yurt, each stage weaves an authentic connection with this land of freedom. A circuit where equestrian adventure reveals the profound soul of eternal Mongolie.

Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Welcome and discoveries in Ulan Bator
Arrival in Ulan Bator, the Mongolian capital, where vast steppes gradually give way to an astonishing city, blending Soviet heritage, nomadic traditions and emerging modernity. Welcome by your driver and transfer to the city center, your first glimpse of this fascinating destination with already striking landscapes. Check-in at your hotel and rest (early check-in not included).
Meet at noon at your hotel, where your guide will meet you before accompanying you to a local restaurant for lunch. This first moment of exchange is an opportunity to get to know each other, discover the main highlights of your adventure and slowly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Mongolia.
Dive into the heart of Mongolian history with a visit to the national history museum. Spread across several floors, the museum traces the rich past of the country, from the first nomadic civilizations to the Soviet period, including the rise of the great empire founded by Genghis Khan. A fascinating visit to better understand the identity and culture of Mongolia.
Walk through downtown Ulaanbaatar to discover the famous Sukhbaatar Square, the heart of the capital dominated by the imposing statue of Genghis Khan. You will also observe the Mongolian Parliament and the liveliness of this amazing city, between Soviet heritage and nomadic culture.
Around 6 PM, you attend a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh, famous for its performances combining folk dances, traditional music, contortion acts and khoomi, the fascinating Mongolian throat singing inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage.
On the road to Karakorum, gateway to the Orkhon
Route to Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this iconic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remnants of the capital remain, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.
Visit to the Erdene zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which bear witness to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.
First steps on horseback in the Orkhon Valley
This is where your horse trekking truly begins. From Kharkhorin, you set off for 5 days of horse trekking along the Orkhon Valley before reaching Naiman Nuur National Park.
The first five days take place with the support of a logistics vehicle.
For this first day on horseback, you progress along the Orkhon River through its eponymous valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A land of nomadism par excellence, the valley welcomes numerous herders each summer who set up their traditional camps there.
From your horse, you observe scenes of nomadic daily life, between freely roaming herds, children playing in front of gers and horsemen riding across the steppe.
You spend this first night in the valley, within a nomadic family of the region.
Ride in the Heart of the Mongolian Steppes
We continue our ride through the lush steppe of the Orkhon Valley, a true nomadic territory. Throughout the day, herds of yaks, sheep, goats and horses roam freely around us, offering a vivid and authentic picture of rural Mongolia.
This immersion in the heart of the steppe holds many surprises for us, revealing a picturesque Mongolia where nature and traditions blend harmoniously.
At the end of the day, we reach the "*Uurt bend*", nestled at the foot of the Khangai Mountains.

Tovkhon Hermitage for an Unobstructed View of the Valley
Coude d'Üürt → Monastère de Tövkhön
From our camp at the Uurt bend, we embark on a day of horseback riding through mountains and forests, heading towards the Tövkhön monastery. This is where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the famous Soyombo alphabet, which has since become a national symbol.
Perched at 2,312 meters above sea level, the monastery offers an exceptional panorama of the Khangaï range and the immense Orkhon valley that stretches as far as the eye can see. We take advantage of this remarkable setting to enjoy our picnic, facing one of the most beautiful landscapes in central Mongolia.
Monastère de Tövkhön → Orkhon Valley
We continue our ride toward the camp.
Day of immersion in nomadic life
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon Valley
Today, you ride to the camp of our local guides, ideally located in the heart of the valley. Upon arrival, we meet their family and discover their daily life as herders, marked by milking animals, dairy production and wood cutting.
These moments of sharing are an opportunity to immerse yourself in Mongolian nomadic life, to observe gestures passed down from generation to generation and to enjoy simple and authentic scenes. A game of knucklebones with the children or a discussion around the fire makes this immersion particularly warm.
Ride towards the Orkhon Falls
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades
Those who wish can embark on a horse trek along the Orkhon Valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls.
For others, it is possible to reach the falls on a hike of approximately 6 km, or by vehicle depending on your preferences.
Visit the Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where a clear flow cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing 16 meters high, they were formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the end of the day, you attend the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.

On the way to the Gobi Desert!
Orkhon Valley → Ongii monastery
A transition day between two ecosystems: you leave the green mountains of the Khangaï to head towards the Gobi.
Discovery of the site, known as the Ongii lamasery, as well as the associated small museum. The dwellings and monasteries, once occupied by nearly a thousand monks, were almost entirely destroyed in 1937. Since 2002, a few religious have returned and have undertaken the reconstruction of the temples with modest means but profound devotion.

Flaming Cliffs and Dinosaurs
Last day of track before reaching the gates of the Great Gobi and its "Three Beauties", the three highest peaks in this part of the Gobi-Altai mountain range: Baruun Saihan, the Western Beauty; Dund Saihan, the Central Beauty; and Züün Saihan, the Eastern Beauty, which peaks at 2,846 meters.
Visit of the Bayanzag cliffs, known as the "flaming cliffs" due to their ochre and red hues, and famous for the "dinosaur cemetery". Surrounded by saxaul forests, they bear witness to an era when dinosaurs still roamed the region. It was here that paleontologist Roy Andrews Chapman discovered, in 1922, the first dinosaur bones and eggs ever unearthed, now visible in the Natural History Museum of Ulan Bator and in several museums around the world.

Arrival in the Khongor Dunes
Early in the morning, you will head towards Khavtsgait Mountain. After a short transfer, you begin your hike. Climbing the Khavtsgait Bagh mountain requires sustained effort, but the view of the desert from the summit is remarkable. You will observe many rock paintings depicting wild sheep, horses, camels and human figures in hunting scenes.
Khavtsgait → Khongor els
We then head west of the park to reach the Khongor sand dunes, or "bright sand". They extend in a wide belt at the foot of the "Three Beauties", forming one of the most emblematic landscapes of the Gobi desert.
Visit of the Khongor dunes. This long expanse of sand, stretching nearly 180 km long and 20 km wide, features dunes approximately 80 meters high, with the tallest reaching 120 meters. From their summit, the view opens onto the immensity of the desert, while the movement of the sand produces a natural humming, at the origin of the name "singing dunes". Beyond the golden ridges, the steppe unfolds as far as the eye can see.

Camel trek and dune climbing
You set out on a camel trek in the heart of the Gobi Desert. At the leisurely pace of this iconic animal, you progress along the dunes and the Khongor River, "Clear Bay", which alternates between surface and underground.
On foot, you climb one of the dunes to enjoy a wide panorama of the desert. From the summit, the silhouettes of the Three Beauties stand out on the horizon and, with a bit of luck, you will hear the singing dunes.

Hiking in canyons
Khongor els → Yolii am
You take the trail heading East from the "Three Beauties" to reach the canyons region.
Hiking in the Yoliin Am canyon, the canyon of bearded vultures. You walk along the bottom of the canyon, covered with an almost permanent blanket of ice. The place is so narrow that the sun's rays can only melt the ice from August onwards, while it invades the canyon for the rest of the year.
After this first hike, you head to the "Mukhart Shivert" canyon. Smaller than Yoliin Am and ending in a dead-end, it remains very impressive: you progress along a large trench surrounded by high vertical walls, with a floor covered in smooth, shiny blue ice (outside the height of summer). At the end of the dead-end is a frozen waterfall most of the time. The round trip takes about an hour.

Granite Peaks of Baga Gazriin Chuluu
Yolii am → Baga gazriin chuluu
You travel through one of the emptiest regions of Mongolie. Between rocky desert and semi-arid steppes, you reach the Baga gazariin chuluu rocky formation mountains, where imposing granite formations shaped by the often harsh elements of this area appear.
In the 19th century, two venerated monks lived here, and their inscriptions carved into the rock are still visible. According to legend, Genghis Khan stayed in this region which is pleasant for walking.

Return to Ulan Bator and free time
Baga gazriin chuluu → Oulan Bator
Return to Ulan Bator. The last herds of wild horses occasionally cross the road before your eyes, while the last smoking yurts in the distance remind you of the steppe right up to the city gates. You then arrive in the city center and settle into your hotel, where you can rest as long as needed.
Rest of the day free. Accompanied by your guide, you browse the city's shops to make your last purchases.

Good return and see you next time!
