How to get around in Malaysia?
Malaysia has a well-developed transport network: trains and buses on the peninsula, flights to Borneo, metros and taxis in cities. For more freedom, rent a car or scooter with your international driving license.
Transport between regions
In Peninsular Malaysia: trains and buses efficiently connect Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. The ETS (Electric Train Service) rail network is modern and comfortable.
To Borneo: flying remains the fastest way to reach Sabah and Sarawak from the peninsula.
Urban transport
- In Kuala Lumpur: metro (LRT, MRT), monorail and Rapid KL buses
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Grab (local equivalent of Uber) very popular
- Traditional taxis: negotiate the price in advance
Vehicle rental
Car: recommended to explore at your own pace, left-hand driving. International driving permit required.
Motorbike and scooter: very popular, practical in small streets and secondary roads. International driving license essential.
Local agency advice
Avoid driving in central Kuala Lumpur during peak hours. Favour public transport in the city and car rental for excursions.
