Walk these trails that wind between lakes and ancient volcanoes of Itasy, in the heart of unique landscapes on the Big Island, dotted with traditional villages of the Highlands.
Crossing these volcanic landscapes of lakes, mountains and rivers, we reach Antsirabe, and the central Highlands, and discover this former thermal town.
The descent towards the east coast offers us the opportunity to explore Ranomafana and its national park, populated by lemurs, birds, reptiles and endemic plants of all kinds, an exceptional and easily accessible biodiversity.
We will then navigate along the Pangalanes Canal, meeting the local life of southeast fishermen, before completing this beautiful loop with the humid primary forest of Andasibe, sanctuary of the largest of lemurs: the Indri-indri.

Hiking around Lake Itasy, the Island of the Virgin
We set off for a day of hiking through hills and forests. The shores of Lake Itasy are dotted with rice fields and other subsistence crops, with the ballet of pirogues as a backdrop. We reach the Islet of the Virgin which is considered the geographical center of Madagascar. From the top of the hill, the view encompasses the entire region.
By car, we return to Ampefy.
Check-in at the hotel for the night.
Duration: +/- 4 hours of hiking / Distance: 11 km

Hiking on the ridges between lakes and ancient volcanoes
Above the village ofAmpefy rises a myriad of volcanic cones.
They overlook the region majestically and, from their summits, the panoramas are grandiose.
The earth is rich and the peasants work it remarkably, the cultivated plots climb the steep slopes and create patchworks of subtle colors.
This hike is a wonderful opportunity to meet the inhabitants on foot. We travel as the people of the region do, making contact all the more natural and pleasant. This loop trail allows us to soak in the soul of the Malagasy Middle West.
Duration: 6 hours of hiking / Distance: 14 km

The beautiful road from Faratsiho to Antsirabe, the Manandona Valley in the heart of the Highlands
Due south, a beautiful mountain road takes us to Faratsiho, via Soavinandriana. We cross a succession of rich agricultural valleys nestled to the west of the Ankaratra massif.
The landscapes are superb, with every shade of green displayed as a palette on the hillsides and rice paddies in the valley bottoms where cassava, sweet potatoes and potatoes are cultivated.
Faratsiho is a large town built against the foothills of the Ankaratra mountains. The town overlooks a magnificent rice plain.
We reach AAntsirabe and, once there, we take time for a city tour. Here, the rickshaw is king, it's the favorite mode of transportation for Antsirabe residents.

Hiking and Discovery of Manandona Valley, at the Foot of Mount Ibity
Starting from the lodge; we set off on foot to discover the typical environment of the Highlands. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Ibity massif, the Manandona Valley is rich and prosperous. The land here is also very generous and rice is the main crop.
After gaining elevation by following good trails crossing the foothills, we return to the valley to meet the inhabitants. All are rice farmers and own zebu cattle, some raise silkworms, others are blacksmiths, basket weavers or carpenters. Traditional craftsmanship is omnipresent.
Our guides are part of a local association for the development of the region. They will be able to tell you about their activities, customs, traditions and development.
Second night with a local family.

Ambositra and Woodcraft, and Road to Ranomafana National Park

Discovering Ranomafana National Park and continuing towards the East Coast at Mananjary
Morning discovery of the Ranomafana forest, with very rich and varied fauna and flora. The Ranomafana National Park covers nearly 41,600 hectares of humid tropical forest. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this forest is home to exceptional endemic biodiversity, including many rare species, unfortunately endangered.
You may have the chance to spot some of the 26 species of lemurs recorded in this area, as well as birds, butterflies, bats, chameleons, other reptiles and amphibians. You will also find a great diversity of medicinal plants, orchids and carnivorous plants.
Keep your eyes open!
We then cross the Vatovavy region, a mountain range that is full of different stones such as emerald, ruby, and amethyst.
We reach the small, quiet town of Mananjary, a producer of vanilla, coffee, and clove, on the banks of the Pangalanes Canal.
We leave our driver-guide here, who will turn our vehicle around to meet us upon our arrival in Manahoro, at the end of our cruise on the Pangalanes. We will be taken care of by the English-speaking guide and the barge crew during the navigation.

Navigation Along the Pangalanes Canal to Ambodirafia
After breakfast, departure for the river cruise on the Pangalanes Canal.
The Canal stretches along the East coast of Madagascar between Farafangana in the south and Foulpointe in the north. This waterway, 665 km long, is much safer than the very tumultuous Indian Ocean.
On this aquatic boulevard, we encounter barges, "bush boats" (river bush taxis), dugout canoes and rafts transporting local products shipped to the nearest cities, including bananas and other seasonal fruits, cassava, fish, dried ravinala leaves for thatching huts… Spontaneous greetings and joyful cries from children on the banks accompany us throughout our navigation. We are spectators of unusual and unforgettable scenes of life.

Ambodirafia to Asohihy along the waterway
After breakfast, embark on board the boat and progress towards Ampanalana via a small canal.
Fishing pirogues cross us in this verdant network of lakes and lagoons that form the Canal.
The passage of the mouth of the Mangoro River, several kilometers wide, constitutes one of the highlights of our stage today.
After wonderful encounters and magnificent discoveries, we will arrive at the end of our navigation, in the middle of the afternoon.
We meet our driver-guide again. Transfer to the hotel and installation in our bungalows.

This reserve is the natural habitat of a large population of lemurs including 11 other lemur species besides the Indri Indri such as bamboo lemurs, sifakas…Other animal species can be seen: chameleons, birds… The flora is equally impressive with several varieties of orchids such as eulophiella, rosewood, palm trees and medicinal plants.

Return to Antananarivo and evening flight back to Paris
After breakfast, drive to Antananarivo, which we will reach by late morning. We rediscover the typical landscapes of the Highlands, the earth becomes redder and the traditional houses of the Imerina in red brick and rammed earth gradually replace the wooden houses of the Betsimitsaraka.
The Malagasy capital is brimming with artisanal and cultural gems. It is here that the best artists and craftsmen of the country are gathered, whether in ironwork, leather goods, marquetry, basketry and many other fields.
A few examples of places to see are the ironwork studio of Violette and Dieudonné, the Izaho leather goods workshop which works with zebu leather, and the many craft galleries in the capital. Is'Art Galerie is also a flagship cultural venue, offering concerts, exhibitions, workshops, a bar and restaurant, as well as an artisanal shop.
We also tour the highlights of the city with our driver-guide. The Upper Town of Antananarivo is on its way to being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gradually, we climb towards the Queen's Palace, from which the 360° view over the entire city is splendid, at the very top of the Analamanga hill, the former name of the city. We will pass successively through the Andohalo square, a major site of Merina aristocracy where kings and queens made their speeches and discussed government decisions with the population.
