How do you get around in Laos?
In Laos, renting a car with a driver remains the best option for safe exploration. Flying allows you to quickly connect major cities, while local buses offer an authentic experience but require more time.
Recommended transport options
- Car with driver : ideal solution to explore every corner of the country safely. The local driver knows the roads, hazards and speaks the language.
- Car rental without driver : possible but not recommended given the state of roads and local driving practices.
- Plane : fastest way between major cities, particularly recommended if time is limited.
Local transport and constraints
The local bus remains the preferred transport of Laotians. For long journeys, opt for the VIP class which offers more comfort and safety. Standard buses are often crowded and in poor condition, but allow for great encounters.
The state of roads poses a major challenge : count approximately 9 hours to cover 400 kilometres. While a few major roads are paved, the majority of roads remain unpaved and deteriorate during the rainy season.
To remember
Always allow more time than planned for your land travel in Laos. Patience is an integral part of the travel experience in this country.
