What are the endemic animals of Kenya?
Kenya is home to several remarkable endemic species: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk (giraffe antelope), as well as endangered species such as white and black rhinoceros, African wild dog, and hirola.
The main endemic species
- Grevy's zebra: the largest of the zebras, recognizable by its narrow stripes and large round ears
- Reticulated giraffe: distinctive for its coat with sharp geometric patterns, like a net
- Gerenuk: long-necked antelope nicknamed "giraffe-antelope", capable of standing on its hind legs
- Hirola: critically endangered antelope, also called "Hunter's hartebeest"
Threatened species to observe
Kenya protects endangered animals such as white and black rhinoceros, the African wild dog, and the white-headed vulture. Kenya's coasts are also home to threatened marine species: blue whale, humphead wrasse and hammerhead shark.
The Big 5 and other emblematic species
Beyond endemic species, Kenya remains one of the best countries to observe the Big 5: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros. The country also offers excellent diving opportunities to discover the marine fauna of the Indian Ocean.
