What are the national symbols of Jordan?
Jordan's national symbols are the flag featuring pan-Arab colors (black, white, green) with a red triangle and a seven-pointed star, and the national anthem "As-salam al-malaki al-urdoni" (Long Live the King of Jordan).
The Jordanian flag
The flag reflects the identity and aspirations of the country. It consists of a red triangle perpendicular to the hoist, on which shines a white star with seven branches and seven points.
- The seven branches represent the Al-Fatiha of the Quran (seven verses of the opening surah)
- The seven points symbolize the beliefs of the Jordanian people: faith in one God, humanity with virtue, humility and social justice, and national spirit directed towards great ambitions
On either side of the triangle, three equal horizontal bands pay tribute to the great caliphs of the Jordanian dynasties:
- Black band: the Abbasids
- White band: the Umayyads
- Green band: the Fatimids
The national anthem
The « As-salam al-malaki al-urdoni » (Long live the King of Jordan) exists in two versions in the Hashemite Kingdom: a shortened version sung daily and a long version reserved for major events. The complete version is notably heard on May 25 to celebrate the independence of the emirate.
