Which seas border Jordan's coastline?
Jordan's coastline opens onto the Red Sea in the south (Gulf of Aqaba) and the Dead Sea to the west, a natural border with Israel and Palestine.
The two seas of Jordan's coastline
- The Red Sea: access via the Gulf of Aqaba in the south, Jordan's only maritime outlet to international waters. Main port: Aqaba.
- The Dead Sea: located to the west, a closed salt lake shared with Israel and Palestine. The lowest point on the globe at -430 metres below sea level.
Geographic features
Jordan has limited maritime access with only 26 kilometres of coastline on the Red Sea. The Dead Sea, although called a "sea", is actually a hypersaline lake with no outlet to the ocean. These two bodies of water offer unique experiences: diving and coral in Aqaba, natural floating in the Dead Sea.
