What are Indonesia's iconic animals?

Indonesia is home to iconic animals such as the orangutan, Sumatran tiger, Javan rhinoceros, and Komodo dragon. Marine biodiversity includes manta rays. Unfortunately, most of these species are threatened with extinction.

Major Threatened Mammals

The Orangutan survives only in Borneo (Tanjung Puting National Park) and Sumatra (Mount Leuser National Park). Classified as critically endangered, it suffers from deforestation and poaching.

The Sumatran Tiger represents the last surviving tiger species in Indonesia. Only 700 individuals recorded in 2008. A survival program has existed since 1990.

The Javan Rhinoceros now numbers only about fifty individuals hidden in the muddy waters of Ujung Kulon National Park.

Reptiles and Marine Life

The Komodo Dragon is an endemic monitor lizard of Komodo Island, measuring 2 to 3 meters long.

Manta Rays inhabit Indonesia's warm waters. Manta Point on Nusa Penida Island offers exceptional encounters for divers.

Key Points to Remember

This exceptional biodiversity faces major threats. Observing these emblematic animals requires visiting protected national parks and respecting conservation rules.
