How to get around in India?

India offers many transportation options: affordable flights for long distances, trains with an extensive network but often crowded, buses less crowded than trains, rickshaws, Uber/Ola, and car rentals with drivers.

Long-distance transport

Airplane remains affordable thanks to low-cost airlines like IndiGo Airlines, Spice Jet, JetKonnect and Go Air. Arrive 1h30-2h before domestic flights, 3h for international with mandatory electronic ticket.

Train has the most extensive network in the world with two types: express (main lines) and passenger trains (local). Book 4-5 days in advance during low season, 15-20 days during Indian school holidays. Useful websites: erail.in for schedules, Indian Railways for reservations.

Bus is often less crowded than train at equivalent prices. Two options: government buses (public) and private buses. Book on redbus.in with seat selection and international payment accepted.

Urban and local transport

  • Rickshaw: motorized auto-rickshaws or bicycle rickshaws. Negotiate the price before departure and beware of commissions with shops/hotels.
  • Uber and Ola: practical applications with estimated fare and geolocation.
  • Car with driver: approximately €20/day with return to starting point, ideal for freedom of movement.

Local agency advice

Avoid Indian school holiday periods (Christmas, mid-May to mid-June, September-October) for better rates and less crowded transport.
