What are Iceland's iconic animals?

Iceland is home to several remarkable species: the Icelandic horse (unique breed), the Arctic fox (sole indigenous land mammal), puffins, reindeer, seals, and numerous seabirds adapted to Arctic conditions.

Iconic Mammals

  • The Icelandic horse: a pure breed preserved for over 1000 years, known for its five gaits including the tölt.
  • The Arctic fox: the only native terrestrial mammal in Iceland, observable mainly in the Westfjords.
  • Reindeer: introduced in the 18th century, they live mainly in the eastern part of the country.
  • Seals: grey seals and harbour seals frequent the Icelandic coasts.

Remarkable Bird Life

Iceland boasts a rich diversity of seabirds. The Atlantic puffin is the country's emblematic bird, visible from May to September on coastal cliffs. You will also find fulmars, guillemots, Arctic terns and many gull species.

To Remember

Unlike other islands, Iceland does not have truly endemic species (found only on the island), but rather populations adapted to the island's particular Arctic conditions.
