Georgia's capital is Tbilissi, a city of over one million inhabitants located in the eastern part of the country, on the banks of the Kura River.

Tbilissi, political and cultural heart

Tbilissi is the capital and largest city of Georgia since 1122. This metropolis of more than one million inhabitants concentrates approximately one third of the country's population. It houses government institutions, the Georgian parliament and the presidential residence.

Geographic location

The capital is located in eastern Georgia, in a valley on the banks of the Koura River. Tbilissi gets its name from the natural hot springs that flow through the city (« tbili » means « warm » in Georgian).

Economic center of the country

Beyond its political role, Tbilissi is the main economic, industrial and cultural center of Georgia. The city concentrates universities, museums, theaters and represents the ideal starting point for exploring the rest of the country.
