How to get around in Ethiopia?

In Ethiopia, you can travel by bus (affordable but slow, 30-50 km/h), hire a car with driver (international license not recognized), or fly with Ethiopian Airlines between major cities to save time.

Public Transportation

The bus remains the most economical means of transportation to travel across Ethiopia. These vehicles connect a large part of the country at very affordable prices. However, comfort is rudimentary and speed is limited to 30-50 km/h. Roads are in poor condition, particularly during the rainy season. Additionally, traffic is prohibited after 6 PM throughout the country.

Car Rental and Driver

For more comfort, car rental is possible but complex: an international driver's license is not recognized in Ethiopia. A request must be submitted in advance to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The recommended solution is to hire a local driver, who provides safety and facilitates meetings with the local population.

Domestic Air Transport

Ethiopian Airlines serves the main cities in the country. This transportation allows you to save considerable time: 1 to 2 hours of flight versus several days by bus for the same routes, all at reasonable prices.

Local Agency Advice

For an optimal trip, combine means of transportation: plane for long distances, vehicle with driver to explore remote regions and discover authentic Ethiopia.
