What is the climate like in China?
China features a highly varied climate across regions. The north experiences harsh winters (down to 0°C) and hot summers (40°C), the central area extreme temperatures year-round, and the south a warm, humid climate with heavy rainfall from April to September.
China's northern climate
The northern region, including Beijing, experiences harsh winters from December to March with temperatures reaching 0°C. Summer (May-September) is dry and sunny with peaks of 40°C, but monsoons in July-August bring heavy rainfall.
Central China's climate: the "three furnaces"
Central China experiences very hot, humid and long summers. The cities of Wuhan, Chongqing and Nanjing are nicknamed "the three furnaces" because temperatures remain very high from April to October. Winter there is also very cold with temperatures often below freezing.
Southern China's climate
The south is characterized by a warm and humid climate. From April to September, this region suffers from heavy rainfall and temperatures reaching 40°C. Even winter remains severe, particularly in January.

Spring and autumn remain the most pleasant periods in all regions, with an average temperature of 23°C, little precipitation and supportable weather conditions.
