Praia, Between Heritage and Beaches

Located on the south coast of Santiago island, Praia is the capital of Cap-Vert. An economic, political and cultural center of the country, the city combines heritage, beaches and local life.

Among the places to discover are the colonial town hall, the classic cathedral, the presidential palace as well as the old city ramparts, still equipped with cannons.

On the cultural side, Praia also has several museums, including the Sala-Museu Amilcar Cabral, dedicated to Amilcar Cabral, and the Museu Etnográfico da Praia, which features traditional Cape Verdean objects.

For travelers wishing to enjoy the coastline, the Praia de Quebra Canela beach offers beautiful stretches of white sand and water suitable for swimming and relaxation, in an environment animated by bars and restaurants.

The Prainha beach, clean and close to the city center, is also a pleasant place to take a break by the sea.

With its pronounced African character, the Praia market is also among the city's attractions, particularly for its fresh products and other items offered there.

The Boutique Hotel Praia Maria is located in a historic building in the city of Praia, close to the international airport. The establishment offers rooms near the beach, all equipped with a private bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and a flat-screen television. On site, you can have breakfast each morning and enjoy the common lounge to relax.

Praia and Cidade Velha

We begin this day with a walking tour in the historic center of Praia, on the Plateau. You discover this cross-shaped neighborhood, the square, the church, the municipal market as well as the art street of Ponta Belém, before descending through the Sukupira market.

You then take the bus towards Cidade Velha, located about twenty minutes from the capital. The first city built by the Portuguese in Africa, it is considered the cradle of Cap-Vert.

The historic center of Ribeira Grande, renamed Cidade Velha at the end of the 18th century, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2009. The site preserves much of its historic remains, its ruins and its typical architecture, between stone walls and thatched roofs.

You then visit the Fort of São Filipe, located 100 meters above sea level. It was built to protect the city from pirate attacks that multiplied between the 16th and 17th centuries, among them Francis Drake and Jacques Cassard.

Upon your arrival at Cidade Velha, you set out to discover the monuments and ruins of the site, including the old cathedral, the Convent of São Francisco, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Banana Street as well as the old slave market and its pillory.
