What is the capital of Bolivia?

Bolivia has two capitals: Sucre is the constitutional capital and seat of the judicial power, while La Paz is the administrative capital where the government and parliament are based.

A unique peculiarity in the world

Bolivia is one of the rare countries to have two official capitals:

  • Sucre: constitutional and historical capital, seat of the Supreme Court
  • La Paz: administrative capital de facto, seat of the government, parliament and ministries

Why this division?

This situation stems from historical tensions between regions. In 1899, after the Federal War, La Paz obtained the transfer of executive and legislative power, but Sucre retained its status as constitutional capital and the seat of judicial power.

To remember for your trip

La Paz, perched at 3,500 meters altitude, remains the political and economic capital. This is where governmental institutions and diplomatic activity are concentrated. Sucre, nicknamed the "White City", remains the historical and legal heart of the country.
