Jour 1

Welcome to Johannesburg!

Upon our arrival in Johannesburg, our local English-speaking representative welcomes us and hands us our "Travel Pack". Private transfer from OR Tambo airport to our guesthouse located in the Melville neighbourhood.

Known as Jozi, Joburg or Egoli, the "City of Gold" is the largest city in Afrique du Sud and the capital of the Gauteng province, the richest in the country. It developed following the discovery of gold in the 19th century.

Long considered a dangerous and unattractive city, Johannesburg is rising from its ashes, 27 years after the end of Apartheid. Not everything is idyllic, far from it, but Joburg deserves at least a two-day stopover, with its markets set on the rooftops of buildings, its trendy restaurants, its relaxed way of life and its particularly welcoming inhabitants.

Street art has brightened the streets of Johannesburg and made people forget the extreme poverty and crime. Alongside the very dynamic student neighbourhood of Braamfontein, the Constitution Hill is topped by the Constitutional Court open to the public. This extraordinary city is "the place to be"!

Visit to Johannesburg

For our free day in Johannesburg, 2 optional visits with English-speaking guides are highly recommended for their major cultural and historical interest:

Among the other recommended walks, we can mention:

  • the Melville district, a bohemian and very lively neighborhood located west of the city, well known for its trendy cafes and restaurants, charming boutiques, artistic venues, antique shops, numerous bookstores, but also for its nightlife punctuated by music and dance.

  • 44 Stanley, a former rehabilitated industrial district, on the edge of the city center, where urbanism and subtle sophistication merge. Design, authenticity, shaded arcades and green patios between what was once a series of 1930s industrial buildings make it a unique space in Johannesburg where one enjoys strolling.

  • Maboneng, a new Brooklyn with a South African twist.

JohannesburgGraskop

4h30400 km

Today, after our breakfast, we pick up our rental vehicle and head to the small town of Graskop located at the gates of Blyde River Canyon.

Our guesthouse in Graskop, nestled in the middle of an exotic garden and peaceful setting in a private house, impresses us with the elegance of the apartments and the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere that prevails. We find all modern comforts there.

The town of Pilgrim's Rest from the gold rush is located 14 km away.

Blyde River Canyon Discovery

Today after our breakfast, a beautiful day awaits discovering this unique place, the Blyde River Canyon. Our guesthouse is located on the scenic route, an ideal starting point to discover its main sites, close to God's Window (7 km), Bourke's Luck Potholes (34 km), Blyde River Canyon (58 km) and the spectacular waterfalls that give the province its reputation - the Mac Mac Falls, Berlin and Lisbon being the closest.

Return to Graskop and overnight in the same guesthouse.

Route to Manyeleti Game Reserve

We are now heading to the Manyeleti Private Reserve, which borders Kruger National Park in South Africa. Upon arrival, we settle into one of the three only lodges in this pristine reserve: Honeyguide Khoka Moya Lodge, designed to offer quality safaris for the whole family.

This little piece of paradise welcomes us for 3 nights on a full board basis. Tea, coffee, wine and local beverages are included. Late afternoon marks the beginning of the adventure with our first safari (included).

Immersion and Safaris in Manyeleti Game Reserve

Our stay at Safari-Camp is organized around a daily routine of safaris and bush exploration. Safaris are conducted twice daily in special 4x4 vehicles. The rangers and trackers possess extensive knowledge of all wildlife and vegetation in the region, and are delighted to share it with us.

Morning safaris generally begin around 5:30 am and take us into the depths of the great Manyeleti concession. During the drive, we stop for a cup of coffee and light refreshments. On safari in the bush, we can expect to see the famous Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros as well as other smaller creatures and many antelope species.

As the heat of the African day intensifies, and after our morning safari of approximately 3 hours, we leave the bush to return to camp where a generous brunch awaits us. Next, we have time to relax, retire to the privacy of our tent, browse the small internal library or unwind by the pool or observe wildlife from the hide at the nearby watering hole.

Another 4x4 safari in late afternoon continues until nightfall. This allows us to observe nocturnal animal species, an exciting experience. Evening safaris last approximately 4 hours and include a stop for sundowner drinks. Upon our return to Safari-Camp, a sumptuous dinner under the stars and around the wood fire, the Boma, awaits us.
