The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in Kigali
Airport welcome by your driver-guide, then transfer to your hotel.
You join the Chez Lando hotel for your room check-in. You then enjoy your dinner on site, before spending the night at the hotel.

Visit to Akagera National Park
Kigali → Parc national de l'Akagera
You leave early in the morning heading towards Rwanda's main nature reserve, the Akagera National Park.
As you progress, the trails located between 1,200 and 1,800 meters altitude reveal great landscape diversity:
hills covered in savanna;
high plateaus offering views towards the Virunga mountains;
lake areas where varied fauna develops.
Upon arrival, you set off on a safari (game drive) to discover the park's wildlife.
After this exploration, you return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a moment of relaxation.
In the afternoon, you enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Ihema, one of the largest lakes in Akagera National Park. During this outing, you can observe crocodiles resting in the sun on the banks, as well as hippopotamuses that regularly emerge at the water's surface.

Safari at Akagera National Park
Early in the morning, after breakfast, you set off to explore the Akagera National Park.
This park, which covers approximately 112,000 hectares, includes vast papyrus marshes crossed by a river connecting several lakes. These landscapes offer an environment conducive to wildlife observation. During the day, you may spot buffalo, zebras, elephants, elands and warthogs, as well as hartebeest and impalas moving through these natural spaces.
The park is also home to nearly 500 bird species, among which the shoebill and papyrus gonolek. It is also one of the places where it is possible to observe the emblematic animals grouped under the term "Big Five".
During this safari, you also visit Mount Mutumba, the highest point in the park, which offers a view of the Akagera lakes and the Karagwe mountains in Tanzania.
You spend between 7 and 8 hours traveling the park's trails in search of wildlife, before returning to the lodge in the late afternoon for a moment of rest.

Crossing the Heart of Rwanda
Parc national de l'Akagera → Kigali
Between the Akagera park and the Southern Province in Huye, passing through Kigali, you cross the heart of Rwanda.
The landscapes come in different shades of green: the blue-green of eucalyptus trees that structure the plots, the dark green of cypresses lining the paths, and the softer green of rice paddies nestled in the valley bottoms. This journey offers you an overview of the Rwandan rural landscape, marked by land fragmented into small cultivated plots, favored by a climate conducive to agriculture.

Guided walk on the canopy, from Huye to Nyungwe Forest
Huye → Parc National de Nyungwe
In the morning, you begin with a visit to the Huye National Museum, an essential stop to better understand Rwanda's history and cultures. This museum houses an important ethnographic collection from Central Africa, offering a detailed overview of local traditions and ways of life.
After this visit, you head towards the Nyungwe National Park. Spanning 970 km² and located between 1,600 and 2,950 meters in altitude, this park benefits from a cool climate. It is home to rich biodiversity, with over 200 tree species and more than 100 varieties of orchids. It is also a habitat for 13 primate species, including baboons, Hoest's red colobus, and gray-cheeked mangabeys.
A network of well-maintained trails provides access to waterfalls and a high-altitude marsh. In the heart of this forest, you stop at Uwinka for a guided walk on the canopy. This crossing over suspended walkways offers you a different perspective on the forest environment.
At the end of this activity, you continue your journey towards Gisakura, where you settle into your lodge for the night.

Chimpanzee and Colobus Trekking
This stay in the heart of the Nyungwe Forest is an invitation to hiking and exploration. This natural site offers several trails allowing you to discover the ecosystem of this rainforest, which is home to 25% of the primate species on the African continent. It is a privileged location for primate observation.
Trekking with chimpanzees
Set out to meet the chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), primates belonging to the hominid family and genetically close to humans. During this immersion in their natural habitat, you observe their behaviors and interactions within the group.
Discovering colobus monkeys
The colobus monkeys are herbivorous primates belonging to the cercopithecidae family. Their diet is primarily composed of leaves, which they digest thanks to an adapted stomach. Observing them in Nyungwe forest allows you to discover these primates evolving in their natural environment.

Route to Kibuye
Parc National de Nyungwe → Kibuye
After breakfast, you will head towards Kibuye, one of the emblematic regions of the Lake Kivu, located at 1,460 meters altitude. Bordered by dense vegetation, this lake is distinguished by its jagged shores and wide viewpoints over the surrounding landscapes.
By taking a long and winding track, you will cross a succession of panoramas overlooking the numerous islands scattered across the lake. Your journey will be punctuated by passages through surrounding villages, with stops encouraging exchanges with the locals.
Stop for lunch at a lodge on the lakeside.
In the afternoon, you will embark on a boat excursion on the waters of Lake Kivu, heading towards Nyamunini Island, recognizable by its shape evoking Napoleon's hat. This navigation will allow you to observe the numerous bats present on the island, while tasting fresh guavas. You will also enjoy the clarity of the water and the landscapes of the bay, dotted with surrounding islands.

Lake Kivu and Virunga Mountains
Kibuye → Parc National des Volcans
Start your morning by enjoying a moment of relaxation on the shores of the Lake Kivu, while contemplating the bay landscapes and surrounding islands. After this break, you will take an asphalt road that winds through dense vegetation, composed of plantain bananas and coffee plantations. This journey will offer you clear views along the Virunga mountain range.
You will end your day by reaching the gates of the Volcanoes National Park, one of Rwanda's emblematic sites.

Meeting the Mountain Gorillas
At the first light of day, mist gradually dissipates over the peaks of the Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyniyo, Gahinga and Muhabura mountains. You find yourself in the heart of the Volcanoes National Park, a site recognized for observing mountain gorillas in their natural environment. Accompanied by a guide and trackers, you will set out in search of them through the forest.
Mountain gorillas, vegetarian and calm in behavior, live in family groups of 8 to 20 individuals, led by a dominant male with a silvery back. The latter, capable of reaching 250 kg for approximately 1.70 m, watches over a group composed of adult females and young.
Observing them in the heart of the forest offers a remarkable moment, up close with these primates and their way of life.

Optional Activities: Explore Further the Volcanoes National Park
For nature and adventure enthusiasts, a second visit to the mountain gorillas can be considered, offering a new opportunity to observe these primates in their natural habitat.
Another alternative is the trekking to the golden monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti), a species observed in the bamboo forests of the park, recognizable by its coat and social behavior.
Hiking enthusiasts can also opt for climbing Mount Bisoke, an extinct volcano offering views over the Virunga region. Finally, for history enthusiasts, a visit to Dian Fossey's tomb, a primatologist committed to protecting mountain gorillas, constitutes both an instructive and memorable excursion.
