The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in Dushanbe
Arrive in Douchanbé and meet your local representative. After settling in, take a short walk through the city center or rest at your hotel. Your guide will present you with the Haut-Bartang itinerary as well as the alternative route planned in case the road is impassable. You can dine at your own pace, with restaurant suggestions available before you begin your journey in the Pamir.

From Dushanbe to Kalaïkhumb
A visit to Hulbuk can be included if departure schedules and road conditions allow. After the lowland localities, the river corridor becomes the main point of interest for the day. Stop at places where it is possible to photograph the landscape safely, then continue to Kalaikhumb for dinner and overnight near the mountain roads.
Douchanbé → Kalaikhum
Traverse the Kulob region to the Panj River, then follow its valley towards Kalaikhumb.

From Kalaikhumb to Khorog
This first journey allows you to discover the landscapes that you will encounter at a slower pace upon your return. The evening is free: you can choose a restaurant and rest before the stages in the Wakhan.
Kalaikhum → Khorog
Go upstream along the Panj River passing the entrances to the Vanj and Bartang valleys before reaching Khorog.
Take advantage of the remaining light to stroll through Khorog's central park and along the riverbanks.

From Khorog to Ishkashim
Your guide introduces you to the languages and settlement patterns of the Wakhan populations, without reducing the region to a simple viewpoint on the border.
Khorog → Ishkashim
Head south from Khorog and continue along the Panj towards Ishkashim, observing the cultivated terraces and houses of villages on the Tajik side.
Visit Garm Chashma when access conditions permit, then enjoy a peaceful walk around Ishkashim before dinner at the guesthouse.

From Ishkashim to Langar
In the evening, share dinner with your hosts and discover how life in the valley evolves between the harvest season and the winter months.
Ishkashim → Langar
Cross through the villages of Wakhan towards Langar, passing by the fortress of Khakha.
Weather permitting, make a stop at the historical site of Vrang before heading to Langar. Discover the viewpoint over the Yamchun fortress and visit the Bibi Fatima springs.

From Langar to Bulunkul and Yashilkul
Villages give way to long open expanses, where wind and water shape the landscapes of the day. Plan for a quiet evening as the altitude at which you sleep increases. Additional acclimatization time may be necessary and can be added before departure.
Langar → Bulunkul
Cross the Khargush corridor to reach the landscapes of the eastern Pamir. Visit an accessible viewpoint over Yashilkul before arriving at Bulunkul.

From Bulunkul to Murghab
This shorter driving day leaves more time to discover the city and acclimatize to the plateau. Discuss the next stages with the driver, who will gather the most recent road information before crossing the High Bartang.
Bulunkul → Murghab
After a morning by the lake, continue towards Murghab via the M41.
Browse the local market if it is active, then explore the center on foot with your guide.

From Murghab to Karakul
From the surroundings of your homestay, observe the variations of light on the surrounding mountain ranges.
Murghab → Karakul
Drive north crossing the Ak Baital pass, where a brief stop is possible if weather permits. Then descend towards Karakul, whose wide shores contrast with the narrow valleys of the western Pamir.
Spend the afternoon taking a short walk along the lake and resting.

From Karakul to Gudara via Upper Bartang
Progress depends on the condition of the trails, watercourses and river crossings; the pace of the day will therefore be determined by the driver's assessment. This stage is only carried out after a local check of the road condition; it is replaced if the crossing is not feasible.
Karakul → Gudara
Leave the main Pamir road to take the High-Bartang route. This isolated approach finally leads you to Gudara and the cultivated lands of the valley floor.

From Gudara to Savnob
Dinner and a night at a family's home will allow you to better understand life in the Bartang Valley.
Gudara → Savnob
Continue descending the high valley by crossing the communities around Pasor and Rukhch. The moderate distance allows you to take time to stop along the way.
Explore the village of Savnob with your guide and discover the location of its fortress, subject to access conditions. Meet the locals and discover how families cultivate their lands in this narrow mountainous environment.

From Savnob to Barchidev
Savnob → Barchidev
Join the Nisur area, then make a detour via Barchidev, the starting point for trips to Lake Sarez.
Stroll between houses and fields with the permission of the residents. Discover how visitors and seasonal supplies reach this high valley. Take time to chat with your hosts. The afternoon remains flexible for a short hike in the surrounding area.

From Barchidev to Rushan
The road alternates between open terraces and narrower passages in the gorges, illustrating why distances to cover in the valley can be misleading. Spend the evening resting and preparing your luggage for the return trip, with a final dinner in a mountain guesthouse.
Barchidev → Rushan
Follow the course of the Bartang downstream, stopping in the accessible localities along the way. Arrive at Rushan, where the Bartang joins the Panj corridor.

From Rushan to Kalaikhumb
After spending several days in the Bartang Valley, the familiar stretches of the Panj now connect the valley communities you have visited. This two-stage return allows you to complete the journey at a more reasonable pace after the most challenging road sections.
Rushan → Kalaikhum
Find the road along the river heading towards Kalaikhumb. Stop for lunch along the way and reach Kalaikhumb without attempting to cover the entire distance to Dushanbe in a single day.

From Kalaikhumb to Dushanbe
The journey takes up most of the day, with breaks for meals and rest scheduled in the program. The program ends here; an additional night at the hotel and a transfer to the airport the next day can be added depending on your connecting flight.
Kalaikhum → Douchanbé
Leave Kalaikhumb heading towards the lower valleys, then continue through the Kulob corridor towards Dushanbe. Arrive in the evening at your choice of hotel in Dushanbe.

For a quality tailor-made trip, budget between 120 and 200 euros per day per person, including accommodation, meals, internal transportation and activities. Tajikistan remains an affordable destination, but its remote location and road conditions require private 4x4 transfers that represent a significant portion of the budget. International flights are additional.

Tajikistan is a demanding destination: long mountain roads, high altitudes on the Pamir, and sometimes basic accommodations. We can design family stays focused on Dushanbe and accessible valleys, prioritizing slow-paced itineraries and comfortable guesthouses, but this destination is better suited for teenagers than young children.
