The spirit of travel
At Lake Khövsgöl, crystalline water reflects peaks over 3,000 meters high while the hooves of Mongolian horses resound across edelweiss meadows. This land of nomadism reveals its secrets through fifteen days of total immersion, from the capital Ulan Bator to the Tsaatan camps lost in the northern taiga.
The journey traverses the striking diversity of Mongolian landscapes: rolling steppes of Arkhangai, dormant volcanoes of Khorgo, Orkhon Valley listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each stage reveals a facet of nomadic life, from setting up yurts with herders to horseback rides across the Siberian taiga to reach the Tsaatans, the last reindeer herding people.
These heirs of ancient shamanic traditions perpetuate a millennia-old way of life in one of the most isolated territories on the planet. Sharing their daily life under reindeer skin tipis, participating in ancestral rituals and riding alongside their herds offers a rare human experience, far from the beaten path, at the rhythm of authentic Mongolie.
The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Welcome and Discoveries in Ulaanbaatar
Arrival in Ulan Bator, the Mongolian capital, where vast steppes gradually give way to an astonishing city, blending Soviet heritage, nomadic traditions and emerging modernity. Welcome by your driver and transfer to the city center, a first glimpse of this fascinating destination with already striking landscapes. Check-in at your hotel and rest (early check-in not included).
Meet at noon at your hotel, where your guide will greet you before accompanying you to a local restaurant for lunch. This first moment of exchange is an opportunity to get to know each other, discover the highlights of your adventure and slowly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Mongolie.
Dive into the heart of Mongolian history during a visit to the National History Museum. Spread over several floors, the museum traces the rich past of the country, from the first nomadic civilizations to the Soviet period, including the rise of the great empire founded by Genghis Khan. A fascinating visit to better understand the identity and culture of Mongolia.
A stroll through the heart of Ulaanbaatar to discover the famous Sukhbaatar Square, the capital's centre dominated by the impressive statue of Genghis Khan. You will also observe the Mongolian Parliament and the hustle and bustle of this amazing city, between Soviet heritage and nomadic culture.
Around 6pm, you attend a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh, famous for its performances combining folk dances, traditional music, contortion acts and khoomi, the fascinating Mongolian throat singing inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage.
Flight to Mörön and Lake Khövsgöl
Transfer to Ulan Bator airport and flight to Mörön, the capital of Khövsgöl province, where your driver awaits you.
Arrival at Lake Khövsgöl, one of the natural wonders of the world. Imagine 2760 km2 of a mountain lake, with water so pure that you can drink it, and surrounded by a dozen peaks reaching over 2000 meters in altitude and covered with pine forests and lush meadows where yaks and horses graze!
You head east, toward the verdant valleys of Alag Sar, where you settle into a small ger camp located on the shores of the lake.

Hiking on the shores of Mongolia's great blue lake
Accompanied by local herders and their yaks, you set off for a day of hiking on foot or horseback in the wooded valleys of Alag Tsar. At the leisurely pace of the cart, you discover a land deeply linked to nomadism. In summer, the region is covered with flowers and it is not uncommon to advance through a carpet of edelweiss. To the west, on the opposite shore, peaks exceeding 3,000 meters are reflected in the clear waters of the lake.
In the evening, you set up the yurt with the herders, the one you transported during the day, and under which you will spend the night.
Peaceful morning at Lake Khövsgöl
Wake up and breakfast in an exceptional setting, with the lake at your feet and mountains as a backdrop. You resume your mounts (*or set off on foot for hikers*) heading towards the Alag Sar yurt camp.
After lunch at the camp, enjoy a relaxing afternoon: swimming, walks along the shores or canoe rental to explore the lake at your own pace.
Journey to isolated Öliin Dawaa
You are heading west of Lake Khövsgöl.
The camps of the Tsaatans, located in the mountains to the northwest, are very isolated and require several days of travel to reach. Your route instead takes you towards Öliin Dawaa, passing through a pass marked by thirteen ovoos. These ovoos, piles of stones and wood placed in passes and sacred places, are offering points where Mongols make three rounds while depositing stones, tugriks, milk or vodka.
You set up your camp for the night and prepare to sleep in your tent, in the heart of nature.
Crossing the steppes to Tsagaan Nuur
Route heading North towards Tsagaan Nuur, land of the Tsaatans. You cross landscapes of rivers and steppes, before crossing several passes to reach the Tsagaan Nuur lake.
Camp setup and night under the tent.
Horseback towards the Tsaatans
Tsagaan Nuur → Campement Tsaatan
You meet the herders who will accompany you throughout your journey towards the tsaatans.
To reach Tsaatan territory, it is mandatory to ride for approximately one and a half days, both on the way there and back, through the taiga. This ride is done independently, with the logistics and your belongings being transported on pack horses.
After crossing the Shishged River by "ferry boat", you enter the taiga landscapes. This wild area, which forms a natural barrier protecting the Tsaatan camps, can be demanding in summer: marshes, flies and mosquitoes mark the progression. Although the stage requires some effort, you take advantage of this trek to exchange with your interpreter and local guides, and to learn more about the daily life of Mongolian herders.
At the end of the day, you set up your camp near the Moorog River, where you enjoy well-deserved rest before reaching, the next day, the Tsaatan camp.
Immersion in the Heart of the Tsaatans
From Campement Tsaatan
You continue your ride through the taiga when, in the distance, the first smoking tipis appear. More than a simple journey, it is a truly human and almost timeless adventure that begins in one of the most isolated places on the planet.
You arrive at the family camp, leave your mounts and set off to meet the inhabitants, who welcome you warmly. The afternoon is free: accompanied by your guide, you will meet the families and explore the surroundings.
Daily life among the Tsaatans
Day dedicated to discovering the Tsaatan people. According to tradition, it is up to the traveler to go to his host: take time to enter the tipis, exchange with different families and share some moments of their daily life. You observe, participate in daily tasks, approach the reindeer, listen to stories, legends and tales, and learn some local games. Part of the day is also dedicated to shamanism, a central element of Tsaatan spirituality.
After sharing a meal and the evening with a family, you fall asleep away from prying eyes, under a tipi made of reindeer skin, in the heart of the Tsaatan camp.
Horseback Riding Trek to Khar Nuur Lake
Campement Tsaatan → Tsagaan Nuur
After this beautiful adventure in the land of the Tsaatans, it's time to get back on your horse. You begin the horseback ride heading south, enjoying the taiga landscapes one last time.
At the end of the day, the camp is set up near Gants Uuliin Khar Nuur lake, before joining Tsagaannuur the next day.
From the Tsaatans to the Beltes River
We then resume our journey by vehicle heading south. The camp is set up on the banks of the Beltes River. Along the way, the landscape transforms: steppes, mountain passes and rivers succeed one another in natural harmony. Take time to appreciate these panoramas.
In the evening, by the fire, if the sky is clear, take advantage of this privileged moment to observe the stars: Mongolie, Tenger, is known for its deep blue sky during the day and dotted with thousands of stars at night.
On the way to the central steppes
You visit the site of the reindeer stelae at Uushigiin Övör, a remarkable megalithic complex adorned with stones engraved with animal motifs.
You stop in Mörön to buy fresh food provisions at the market, then have lunch in town before continuing your journey.
You take the road towards the center of the country: the track crosses several passes and descends into isolated valleys where landscapes change rapidly. Altitude exceeds 2,000 meters at the passes.
As you progress, the panoramas gain in diversity, inviting you to make multiple stops to enjoy the views and take some photos.
Lake and Volcano Region
Shine Ider → Parc national de Terkhiin Tsagaan
You head towards the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur natural park located at 2,060 meters altitude. This lake, nicknamed "the great white lake", forms with the volcanic area surrounding it an emblematic site of the Arkhangai province.
You spend the night with a nomadic family, in the mountainous part of the park.
Hiking on Khorgo Volcano
From Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur
You set off on a hike along the shores of the lake, heading South-East towards the Khorgo volcano, which peaks at 2,240 meters. You climb it, an accessible and progressive ascent. From the summit, the view unfolds over the lake and the surrounding hills.
Near the volcano, lava flows shape a singular landscape, contrasting with the environments encountered so far.

Relaxation at Tsenkher Hot Springs
Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur → Tsetserleg
You continue your journey through the heart of Arkhangai and discover vast steppes where many herding families live and where yaks and other livestock graze. You stop in Tsetserleg, a small town nestled in a landscape of mountains covered with larches.
There, you stock up at the local market before visiting the Zayan Gegeen museum.
Tsetserleg → Sources chaudes de Tsenkher
You arrive at the Tsenkher hot springs, where you can relax in the hot water baths of the camp.
Nomadic life in the Orkhon Valley
Sources chaudes de Tsenkher → Monastère de Tövkhön
You leave the road to take the tracks and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the verdant steppe where herds of nomadic families roam. You are then welcomed by a herding family in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Orkhon Valley → Тovkhon
On the way, excursion to the Tövkhön monastery. The ascent to the summit of the Öndör Ulaan hill, accessible only on foot, leads to the Tovkhon hermitage, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. Located at 2,312 m altitude, the site offers a vast panorama over the Khangai range. You enjoy a picnic in this exceptional setting, with the Orkhon valley below.
Return to your hosts' place and then a stroll around the camp area.
2-night stay with a nomadic herding family. You will discover the nomadic way of life and share their daily routine in complete simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in animal milking, traditional dairy product making or even herding livestock on horseback.
(Activities subject to seasonality)
Orkhon Falls Visit
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades
Those who wish can set off for a horseback riding along the Orkhon Valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls.
For others, it is possible to reach the falls during a hike of approximately 6 km, or by vehicle according to your preferences.
Visit to Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where a clear stream cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing 16 meters high, they were formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the end of the day, you witness the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.
Karakorum and Khogno Khan Landscapes
Orkhon Valley → Kharkhorin
Route for Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stages of the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.
Visit to the Erdene Zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architectures, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the ancient capital and its region.
Departure to the magnificent rock formations of Khögnö Khan. You discover a park with varied landscapes, between semi-desert steppes, taiga zones, granite massifs and a long strip of sand approximately 80 km, which earned it the nickname of "mini Gobi".
Then, you head off on a hike to the Khambiin Khiid Monastery. Perched in the mountains, this 17th-century monastery was built by Zanabazar as a tribute to his spiritual master, the monk Erdene. The peaceful atmosphere that reigns there and the view over the surroundings make it a memorable cultural and spiritual stop.

Elsen Tasarkhai and return to Ulan Bator
You take the road back to Ulan Bator. Along the way, the last herds of horses crossing the road and the last yurts glimpsed in the distance accompany you to the outskirts of the capital.
You then arrive in the city center and settle into your hotel, where you can rest for a few moments.
The rest of the day is free. Accompanied by your guide, you browse the shops in the city to make your last purchases and enjoy the atmosphere of Ulan Bator one last time.

Safe travels and see you next time!
Breakfast at the hotel. The driver will accompany you to Ulan Bator international airport. The return transfer will take place at the time you wish, depending on your flight.
