The spirit of travel
Yurts stand in the Orkhon Valley, their white felts contrasting with the golden grass of September. Around the central hearth, herding families prepare fermented airag while their herds graze under an immense sky. This circuit crosses Mongolia of living traditions, from Karakorum the ancient capital to the hot springs of Tsenkher, passing through the Khangai mountains where millennia-old shepherd trails wind.
Four days of trekking lead you through the remote valleys of Lower Khangai, where Zanabazar composed the Soyombo alphabet in his Tovkhon hermitage. Przewalski's horses gallop freely in the Khustai reserve, the last refuge of these wild equines reintroduced after their extinction. The volcanic lake of Terkhiin Tsagaan reflects the black lava flows of the Khorgo volcano, witnesses to the geological activity that still shapes these high plateaus.
This Mongolia, the one of shamanic rites and diphonic chants, reveals itself in the slowness of travel on foot and horseback, at the turn of encounters with those who perpetuate the nomadic art in the immensity of the steppes.
The stages of your journey
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Welcome and discoveries in Ulan Bator
Arrival in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolie, where vast steppes gradually give way to an astonishing city, blending Soviet heritage, nomadic traditions and emerging modernity. Welcome by your driver and transfer to the city center, your first glimpse of this fascinating destination with already striking landscapes. Check-in at your hotel and rest (early check-in not included).
Meet at noon at your hotel, where your guide will greet you before accompanying you to a local restaurant for lunch. This first moment of exchange is an opportunity to get to know each other, discover the highlights of your adventure and slowly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Mongolie.
Immerse yourself in Mongolian history during a visit to the National History Museum. Spread across several floors, the museum traces the rich past of the country, from the first nomadic civilizations through the Soviet period, including the rise of the great empire founded by Genghis Khan. A fascinating visit to better understand the identity and culture of Mongolia.
Walk through downtown Ulaanbaatar discovering the famous Sukhbaatar Square, the heart of the capital dominated by the impressive statue of Genghis Khan. You will also observe the Mongolian Parliament and the vibrant atmosphere of this amazing city, between Soviet heritage and nomadic culture.
Around 6:00 PM, you attend a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh, famous for its performances combining folk dances, traditional music, contortion acts and khoomi, the fascinating Mongolian throat singing inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage.
Departure to the steppe towards the mini-Gobi
Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Every morning, monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere full of serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and to freely exchange with people present on the site.
Departure for the splendid rock formations of Khögnö Khan. You discover a park with varied landscapes, between semi-desert steppes, taiga zones, granite massifs and a long strip of sand approximately 80 km, which earned it the nickname "mini Gobi".
Stroll along the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai where we discover the arid landscapes of the Bayan desert.
Then, you hike to the Khambiin Khiid Monastery. Perched in the mountains, this 17th-century monastery was built by Zanabazar in homage to his spiritual master, monk Erdene. The peaceful atmosphere that prevails there and the view over the surroundings make it a remarkable cultural and spiritual stop.
Stay with the Nomads of the Orkhon
This morning, you leave the road to take the trails and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the green steppe where herds of nomadic families roam. You are then welcomed by a family of herders in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Accompanied by Bolortsetseg, you take advantage of this exceptional natural setting to listen to her shamanic teachings and deepen your connection with the earth and the elements.
2-night stay with a family of nomadic herders. You will discover the nomadic lifestyle and share their daily life in complete simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in animal milking, traditional dairy product making or herding livestock on horseback.

Orkhon Waterfall Visit
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades
Those who wish can set off on a horse trek along the Orkhon Valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls.
For others, it is possible to reach the falls on a trek of approximately 6 km, or by vehicle depending on your preferences.
Visit to Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfall, where a clear flow cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing 16 meters high, they formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the end of the day, you will witness the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.

First Steps in the Lower Khangai
Orkhon Valley → Monastère de Tövkhön
Start of your 4-day hiking trip, which takes you through the Khangai mountain range, from the Orkhon valley to the Tsenkher hot springs.
After a short vehicle transfer, you begin your hike on the north bank of the Orkhon River. A first climb awaits you in the morning, followed by a descent to the valley at the foot of the Öndör Shireet hill.
Lunch is planned near nomadic winter camps, where you can observe petroglyphs dating back to the Bronze Age.
You then begin the ascent of Öndör Shireet hill to reach the charming hermitage of Tövkhön, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. From this monastery perched at 2,312 meters altitude, you enjoy a vast panorama of the Khangai mountain range.
The hike is conducted with the assistance of the logistical vehicle.
Crossing the Valleys of Lower Khangai
Walking tour
Crossing the Lower Khangaï. You find the valley you traveled through the day before and go back up it for several kilometers before turning toward a more wooded area. Many herders live here, and you encounter yak herds as well as several nomadic camps. A vast plain opens up before you before lunch.
You then continue your progression through the valley, cross the riverbed and then pass over one last hill. Your camp for the night is located just after the small pass, at the entrance to the valley.
Tsetserleg Valley and Bivouac
Walking tour
Early in the morning, departure to reach the Tsetserleg River at lunchtime. You advance along the valley reached the previous day, then cross the pass before descending towards the Tsetserleg.
Lunch by the river, with the possibility of swimming in June, July and August. After this relaxation time, you set off again for an hour's walk upstream along the river. Camping on its banks.

Arrival at Tsenkher Hot Springs
To Sources chaudes de Tsenkher
For this last day of hiking, you cross the Tsetserleg and progress along its western bank before turning towards a pass. A ritual offering is made at the ovoo at the summit. You then skirt a larch forest until you reach the Tsenkher river. Lunch.
The afternoon begins with an easy ascent towards a pass, then you continue on the opposite slope, along a pleasant forest trail. At the end of the descent, a vast plain opens before you, at the end of which are the Tsenkher hot springs, where you can relax in the hot water baths of the camp.
Adventures in Arkhangai and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake
Driving
You continue your journey through the heart of Arkhangai and discover vast steppes where many herding families live and where yaks and other herds graze. You stop at Tsetserleg, a small town set in a landscape of mountains covered with larch trees.
There, you resupply at the local market before visiting the Zayan Gegeen museum.
Tsetserleg → Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur
Then head towards the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur natural park located at 2,060 meters altitude. This lake, nicknamed "the great white lake", forms with the volcanic zone surrounding it an emblematic site of the Arkhangai province.
2-night stay in a yurt camp set on the shores of Terkhiin Tsagaan lake, offering a welcome break after your trek in Arkhangai.
Khorgo Volcano Hike
You set off on a hike along the shores of the lake, heading South-East towards the Khorgo volcano, which rises to 2,240 meters. You climb it, following an accessible and progressive route. From the summit, the view unfolds over the lake and surrounding hills.
Near the volcano, lava flows shape a singular landscape, contrasting with the environments encountered so far.

Route to Karakorum
Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur → Kharkhorin
Route to Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, reminding us of the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.

Visit of Monasteries and Khustai Reserve
Visit of the Erdene zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the former capital and its region.
Kharkhorin → Khustai
Road heading towards the Khustai nuruu national park, a vast protected territory famous for being home to the last Przewalski's horses, called locally Takhi. Successfully reintroduced into the Mongolian steppes, these wild horses now roam in complete freedom.
At the end of the day, when the light becomes softer and the animals more active, a walk takes you to their usual watering point. You will then be able to observe them discreetly in their natural environment, in the heart of the vast Mongolian spaces.
You will spend your final night in the steppe, welcomed by a nomadic family settled on the outskirts of the national park.

Return to Ulan Bator and free time
Baga gazriin chuluu → Oulan Bator
Return to Ulaanbaatar. The last herds of wild horses sometimes cross the road before your eyes, while the last smoking yurts in the distance remind you of the steppe right up to the city gates. You then arrive in the city center and settle into your hotel, where you can rest as long as needed.
Rest of the day free. Accompanied by your guide, you explore the city's shops to make your final purchases.

Good to see you again and see you next time!
