aride tropical climate
Socotra, nicknamed the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean, is an extraordinary Yemeni island nestled at the eastern tip of the Gulf of Aden. Its arid tropical climate is shaped by two major forces: the southwestern summer monsoon and the dry winter season. The island experiences three distinct periods that are essential to understand before planning your trip. The best season runs from October to April: temperatures are mild, between 22 and 30°C depending on the month, skies are clear and the calm sea allows boat crossings to adjacent islands. This is the ideal period to discover the famous dragon trees, white sand beaches and the lunar landscapes of the interior. From May to June, heat rises and the first swells announce the imminent arrival of the monsoon. From June to September, Socotra is swept by violent winds and impressive waves: air and maritime links are often suspended, making the island virtually inaccessible. This period should be avoided entirely. For an optimal experience, favour the months of November to March: the light is superb, vegetation still verdant after autumn rains, and temperatures perfectly bearable for hiking up to the Diksam plateau. Remember to book well in advance, as accommodation options remain limited on this island still preserved from mass tourism.
