Day 5The Mountain Tribes

Day 5The Mountain Tribes

  • Today, we head into the mountains overlooking the city of Chiang Mai, in the Mae Wang region, where we will begin a guided hike to discover the Karen people of northern Thailand. The Karens are the largest minority ethnic group in the country, with an estimated population of approximately 1 million individuals. Originally from Tibet, they moved southward into Myanmar and northern Thailand.

The Karens are traditionally animists, with a strong belief in the spirit world, especially the spirits of "earth and water" that control the productivity of the land and call forth the rice to grow. Much of Karen tribe life is thus dictated by spirits, and they are a very superstitious people. The village chief is a revered figure who leads the rituals and must be consulted when setting the date for a ceremony or event in the village.

We start our hike through the still-green rice fields of the region. Discover the Mae Wang Waterfall. Visit a Karen village where we will have lunch and meet with the locals.

    Return to Chiang Mai.
