10 important places to visit in Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India is the largest metropolis by area in the country. Being a vibrant city with a rich past, Delhi is considered as one of the historical capitals of the world. As a result of it being an important seat of many powerful empires in the past, the city of Delhi can be traced in its many carefully-preserved monuments, ancient forts and tombs. The city is divided into two parts- Old Delhi and New Delhi. Old Delhi represents the history of India with mosques, forts and other monuments whereas New Delhi is the seat of Government and houses the government buildings and embassies. Some of the important places to be visited in Delhi are:

1. Red Fort

Built in the year 1638, Red Fort exemplifies the era of Mughal rule in India. On visiting this mammoth of Mughal period, you would be submerging in Mughal era. It is also a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE which served as a residence of Mughal empire for nearly 200 years.

2. Humayun’s Tomb

A perfect blend of Persian and local craftmenship, Humayun’s Tomb is built by Queen Haji Begum, widow of Humayun.  Bearing resemblance to world famous Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb is the first garden tomb of Indian subcontinent.

3.  Qutab Minar

Built by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, this 73m tall tower is said to be constructed to commemorate the victory and beginning of Mughal era in India.  This five storey minaret is constructed with red sandstone and white marble. Red sandstone was used in the construction of the first three storeys whereas last two were built with marble and sandstone.

4. India Gate

Constructed in the year 1931, India Gate is a war memorial for over 70,000 soldiers killed during First World War and Afghan War. We can see the names of the soldiers inscribed on the walls of India Gate. Pleasant atmosphere makes it the best place to stroll in the evening.

5. Lodi Gardens

Surrounded by the beauty of nature, Lodi garden is an excellent place to stroll and enjoy. It is spread over an area of 90 acres and has five beautiful architectural works of 15th century (Mohammad Shah’s Tomb, Sikandar Lodi’s Tomb, Sheesh Gumbad and Bada Gumbad). It is a great place for family picnics.

6. Dilli Haat

It transports you to the magical world of Indian art and heritage presented through a fascinating panorama of craft, cuisine and cultural activities. Shop for all the ethnic wear you wish, overload your bags with beautiful pieces of handicraft . It is also a great place to taste appetizing delicacies of different states of India. You might also have a chance to bump into a fancy exhibition or a dance/music performance.

7. Agrasen ki Baoli

Situated in the heart of the city, surrounded by tall buildings of Connaught Place, Agrasen ki Baoli is the best place to enjoy the magic of the historical city. Amongst the crowd, you might spot poets and artists working their magic on paper.

8. Lotus Temple

Lotus Temple is an architectural wonder which will enthrall you in its serene environment. One can experience an atmosphere of complete calmness and pray to their respective gods.

9. Tughlaqabad  Fort

With its battered walls of grey rubble perched on desolate hills, where its position gives it a natural advantage, Tughluqabad was raised as a stronghold rather than as an architectural enterprise. It was built by the founder of the Tuglaq Dynasty in 1321, this fort is spread over an area of 6.5 km

10. Bangla Sahab Gurudwara

Don’t forget to make a stop at the beautiful white marble Sikh Gurudwara. The melodious chanting of hymns will take you to a different world all together. The Sarovar which is the holy water body is situated right in the middle of Gurudwara. It’s delicious kada Prasad will give you a heavenly taste.
